The Steepest Climb - the story of the IBCC
The International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln is a world leading site of commemoration for the 57,861 men and women of many nations who gave their lives supporting the Command in World War Two.
And national tourism recognition has come in 2023 as the IBBC won the Bronze in the Visit England Awards for Excellence Large Attraction Section (behind only the Warner Bros Harry Potter Trail and Blenheim Palace)
The idea and inspiration came in 2009 from Lincolnshire’s then Lord-Lieutenant, the late Tony Worth, who lost two uncles in the Command.
Tony and a small staff team plus many volunteers, had to work, inspire, beg, battle, and ultimately borrow to achieve the £16m Centre, officially opened on a memorable site on the South Common ridge opposite Lincoln Cathedral in 2018.
Filmmaker Andrew Blow filmed on 37 occasions from 2015. Across 8 items, and 100 minutes, the story of the IBCC unfolds.
The title film, “The Steepest Climb”, filmed at the official opening, reflects the uphill slog that Tony and the team undertook to create the Centre and commemorate the Command in “Bomber County” from which many of them flew.
The online Losses Database is a comprehensive source about the fallen and what happened to them. Work is ongoing to make it yet more informative.
And the Digital Archive steadily grows as photographs, diaries, log books, etc, loaned by families, are scanned, curated, and put online. Both these online resources are featured in the DVD.
The Chadwick Centre employs state-of-the-art technology and interactive displays to tell the story through the eyes of those who saw events first-hand and is also covered in the DVD.
The IBCC carries stories from communities at home and abroad that were bombed - and is indeed a place of Recognition, Remembrance and Reconciliation.
